Glass Tile: Let's Talk About It

Glass has been a been a beautiful tile option for quite some time. Technically, records show that glass tile dates back to 500 AD when Byzantine artists began using it for decoration. At the turn of the century, the “Church of Gold” in Venice was constructed with glass mosaic art displayed throughout. From there, the glass tile trend really took off. We now see it in so many beautiful churches and historical buildings. In modern buildings, we tend to see it installed as a kitchen backsplash or in pools. Glass tile is a great option for so many reasons, and it’s time these products get some recognition (via).

Let’s talk about it!

Cleanliness

We often hear clients saying that cleanliness is a big priority when it comes to tile. We get it! Good news - cleaning glass tile is incredibly easy in comparison to other tile materials. While tile with ceramic material is known to be somewhat porous, meaning they absorb water, glass, on the other hand, is considered non-porous. What does this mean? Well, this means that you do not have to worry about water seeping through the tile and causing issues down the road. This is why a lot of tile products that are pool-rated are glass. (Disclaimer: Please note that each product is different. Please check with your design consultant about which products work better with water.)

Imagine this: You are cooking a fabulous meal in your kitchen when spaghetti sauce flies up and splashes on the beautiful backsplash you have! This is not a huge issue with glass tile! All you need is a soft cloth and soapy water or cleanser, and you’re good to go! This makes life way less stressful. There are so many tile products that are absolutely stunning but involve risk. With many porous materials, you often have to be more careful that no stains or mold issues arise.

Sustainability

If you are looking for an environmentally-friendly option, glass tile is the way to go. Many glass tile products are actually made from recycled glass. In addition, some glass tile can be recycled after removal. This will create less waste with future interior design remodels. In addition, glass tile production is often less harmful to the environment in comparison to other materials. They tend to require less energy to produce. All of these factors will help reduce your carbon footprint (via).

Beauty

Lastly, let’s talk about how incredibly gorgeous these tiles are! The transparency of these tiles creates a luminescent glow throughout the entirety of your space. The sunlight will reflect off of the tile, creating a stunning and sparkling ambiance. This can make your space seem lighter and larger. Also, glass products come in a variety of colors and shapes. They create a clean-cut contemporary look, and we just can’t get enough of them!

If you are building or remodeling and are trying to make decisions on tile, consider going with glass! Glass tile is a wonderful choice for so many reasons including its cleanliness, sustainability, and beauty.
