Zellige Tile - A Classic Statement

Zellige-style tile has become a popular design element this year. We’ve seen it in all different types of homes - from traditional to cottage and mid-century to industrial. When design elements begin to grow in popularity, we tend to ask ourselves - Is this simply a trend? Will this style be outdated by next year? When remodeling one’s home, many people tend to want to choose design products that will last for a long period of time. Therefore, trendy design elements can sometimes seem risky. The great thing about the zellige-style is that while, yes, this tile may not be on-trend in a few years, it will continue to have a classic and almost timeless look. Why is this? Well, just take a look!

What is Zellige Tile?

According to the Mosaic Factory, the authentic zellige tiles are “Moroccan tiles, crafted one by one from non-refined natural clay extracted in the region of Fez (Morocco). The glazing (vitreous compounds and mineral pigments) is applied on the tiles, then melted/vitrified, resulting in multiple semi-transparent, metallic, pearlescent or opaque shades.” What makes this tile so incredible? Each zellige tile is completely unique.

In 2021, there are so many products that are considered “zellige tile” that are actually porcelain or ceramic tile, as seen in the image below. These products have the same look as the Moroccan zellige products but may be more available for one’s budget or installation location. Why are Zellige Tiles Trending?

An important design aspect that we’ve discussed in this year’s blogs is that one’s space is unique and personalized for them. The beauty of zellige tile is that it is perfectly imperfect. Each tile has its own individual qualities, which makes the space seem special. The uniqueness of these products is possibly a result of the variation in shape, texture, and color. Even with the zellige-style products that are machine made, the variation can still create a handmade look. This can fullfill our need for connectivity within the home - a major interior design component for 2021. Oftentimes, when we feel that the products within our home were made with care, we can appreciate them and our space even more.
